There’s nothing static about our relationship with public spaces, as this hypnotic (haunting?) film from San Francisco illustrates. When you’ve got a few minutes to chill, turn on the speakers, sit back, and watch a 100-year-old slice of life. Oh yeah, and there are bikes!

What really strikes me about that video is how comfortable the pedestrians are - I wish we had a way of reclaiming streets for pedestrians like that in modern times, without having to do anything as drastic as banning cars from them altogether.

Wow, without signs and pavement markings, people really had to be aware of their surroundings, negotiate crossings, and really interact with others to ensure everyone’s safety. Maybe the shared space idea has some merit, but I fear that at the speeds that everyone travels today it would be hard to keep it safe.
