I made the jump into trying what track racing is all about, and I’ve got to say it’s a lot more fun than you’d think it would be (riding in circles? come on!)
The MVA offers beginning classes for all levels of rider and fitness (this was my first time on the track and on a track bike).
The class is four hours long and only costs $40. After finishing this course, you can then start racing in the Monday night races and/or attending the Thursday night new-rider sessions.
The class spent a considerable amount of time talking about track riding and racing. Spending ample time on safe rider practices and techniques. Matter of fact, the main message was safety. The big part of that is in communication with the riders around you.
The instructors were all friendly and willing to answer questions and share their experiences. The first few times around I was for sure that if I went up onto the embankment I’d scrape my crankset onto the track. So much so that I went in and asked, and they said that you don’t really have to worry about that at all on this track. They were right.
This was the first of ten courses, and the next two are already full. If you’ve ever thought about giving this a try, you should go for it.
