Treating road rash

February 25th, 2006 · No Comments

A fairly old (early January) thread from the Cascade forums on what to do with road rash. Quite a few replies, and some good advice.

I’m planning to do a lot of riding this year, and although I haven’t fallen yet I think it’s good to be prepared. So, I want to put together a kit with all the stuff I’d need to recover as quickly and painlessly as possible from any post-fall abrasion.

In looking around online it seems like a lot of people are recommend the “Duoderm” hydrocolloid dressings, but many of those articles seem to be a few years old. So, is this still the best treatment for road rash? If so, where would you pick up this kind of stuff near downtown Seattle, and exactly how do you use it (e.g. what should you do as an emergency measure until you get home, for example should you try to flush out the wound with the contents of your water bottle? how should you clean the wound once you get home? do you wait for the wound or at least your just-washed skin to dry before applying the dressing? and what is the best way to make sure the Duoderm dressing stays in place and doesn’t get disturbed after you resume cycling?)
