Seattle expeditioner departs Canary Islands on Atlantic leg of Circumnavigation

February 15th, 2006 · No Comments

Seattle extreme expeditioner Erden Eruç began a four month, 4,539 mile (3,944 nautical miles) solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea aboard a 23-foot ocean rower on Sunday, departing Las Palmas in the Canary Islands for Puerto Limon, Costa Rica.

Full story from row2k.com

I first met Erden a couple of years ago when he gave a talk about his Stage 1 phase of his six summits project.

Erden left Seattle on February 1, 2003, riding his Novara Safari bicycle equipped with Ortlieb panniers, and towing a BOB Ibex Trailer. The road weight of the entire rig was 175 lbs. He was heading to Alaska’s Denali National Park for Mt. McKinley - to summit the highest peak in North America by human power. He achieved this goal with his friends on May 29th, and rode his cycling rig back to Seattle complete with his trailer and climbing gear.

Actually, truth be told I actually saw him in the old Lynnwood REI one weekend as he was getting some help modifying his BOB trailer (getting a kickstand put on it). I recall seeing this rig fully decked out and wondering “Where the heck is he going?”. Little did I know I’d find out in a few months.

Anyway, it looks like he’s back at it. I highly suggest reading the stage 1 story, it’s a great read.
